He finally set his mug down. He took the heavy metal cylinder from my hand, brought it close to his face, and squinted at the scratches near the tip. Suddenly, his eyes widened, and a sheepish, embarrassed smile spread across his face.
“Oh, wow,” he laughed, running a hand through his hair. “I am so sorry. That’s my 3/16th masonry drill bit.”
I blinked, the tension in my chest suddenly having nowhere to go. “A… what?”
“The masonry bit,” he repeated, shaking his head at his own forgetfulness. “Yesterday, when I was fixing that loose brick on the side of the garden wall? I set my drill down to grab the level, and I must have just slipped this into my pocket without thinking. I was so focused on finishing the wall before it rained that I completely forgot it was there.”
