He handed it back to me. The “surgical precision” was just the carbide tip designed to break concrete. The “tiny scratches” were from grinding against brick. The “threaded base” was just the flutes designed to clear dust from a hole.
He hadn’t been hiding a dark secret. He had just been a distracted husband doing weekend yard work, and his brain had been so focused on his to-do list that he literally didn’t register the weight of the tool in his pocket until he actually looked at it.

I stood there for a moment, processing the sheer, mundane innocence of the truth. And then, I started to laugh.
It started as a small chuckle and bubbled up into full, tearful laughter. He joined in, wrapping his arms around me and apologizing for giving me a heart attack over a piece of hardware.
In an instant, the heavy, suffocating cloud of suspicion vanished, replaced by the warm, familiar comfort of the man I knew and loved. The monster I had built in my mind dissolved back into what it always was: a stray drill bit.
