It did not take much to realize that Daniel was cheating on me. I just never would have guessed that his deceit would soon provide me with all the leverage I required to come out ahead in the end.
For eleven years, Daniel believed I was weak only because I never argued with him, not even he was in the wrong. He disdained my career and regarded my accounting as nothing more than a mere pastime, introducing me at dinner parties as “the one who keeps the house in order.” He conveniently forgot that my forensic audit firm is what kept his logistics company, Mercer Freight, from going bankrupt five years back. Moreover, he never even realized that I owned fifty-one percent of our business through the family trust fund.
His relationship with his secretary, Vanessa, was no covert operation. She was young, brash, and careless enough to leave her perfume on his clothes and run up bills for expensive hotels on his credit card—which I knew he thought I had not checked. Once during a meal, he received a text from her containing an image that made him smile, and when I asked about it, he waved it off, saying it was purely business and nothing for me to worry about.
Rather than making a spectacle of the situation, I simply started building my case. I kept all evidence in a file that I compiled. This was hard to do, but losing my cool would only have made him suspicious. I let him believe that he was getting away with everything while I took measures to protect myself and our home despite the fact I never signed a prenuptial agreement.
